A 4-years' analysis of the meiofauna community of a dumping site for TiO2-waste off the Dutch coast OMA
Smol, N.; Huys, R.; Vincx, M..
Sublittoral meiofauna of 24 stations was monitored over 4 years (1984-1987) in and around a dumping site for TiO2- acid waste in the Southern Bight of the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The meiofauna was examined quantitatively and qualitatively with special reference to the nematode and the copepod community structure down to species level and to the trophic structure of the nematodes. Biological, sedimentological, geographical parameters and the concentration of several heavy metals were subject to multivariate statistical analysis and classification techniques to evaluate the impact of the TiO2- dumping activities. The meiofauna is dominated by nematodes, copepods, gastrotrichs and turbellarians. There is a...

A active wave generating-absorbing boudary condition for VOF type numerical model OMA
Troch, P.; De Rouck, J..
The objective of the present work is to discuss the implementation of an active wave generating–absorbing boundary condition for a numerical model based on the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method for tracking free surfaces. First an overview of the development of VOF type models with special emphasis in the field of coastal engineering is given. A new type of numerical boundary condition for combined wave generation and absorption in the numerical model VOFbreak2 is presented. The numerical boundary condition is based on an active wave absorption system that was first developed in the context of physical wave flume experiments, using a wave paddle. The method applies to regular and irregular waves. Velocities are measured at one location...

A box-model of metal flows through the Scheldt estuary (1981-1983 and 1992-1995) OMA
Baeyens, W.F.J.; Monteny, F.; Van Ryssen, R.; Leermakers, M..
The behaviour of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the Scheldt estuary was investigated in the periods 1981 to 1993 and 1995. The Hg behaviour was studied between 1992 and 1994. A box model was used to establish the relationship between the trace metal inputs and the fate of these pollutants in the Scheldt estuary. Annual budgets were calculated for particulate and dissolved trace metals. For Hg, seasonal budgets of the various species (inorganic Hg, methylmercury, Hg°) could also be calculated. These budgets allow an evaluation of the consistency of each individual flux or process, such as the inputs of the various metals into the North Sea, the sedimentation flux of particulate metals in the area of high turbidity, the evasional fluxes and the formation rates of...

A budget of carbon cycling in the Belgian coastal zone: relative roles of zooplankton, bacterioplankton and benthos in the utilization of primary production OMA
Joiris, C.R.; Billen, G.; Lancelot, MH.; Daro, M.H.; Mommaerts, J.-P.; Bertels, A.; Bossicart, M.; Nijs, J.; Hecq, J.H..
The various biological compartments of the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea were studied since 1971. The synthesis of available data on carbon cycling includes phytoplankton biomass and activities (particulate and dissolved primary production, respiration) , zooplankton biomass and activities (grazing, respiration) and planktonic and benthic microbial heterotrophic activities. These various carbon flux estimates allow the development of an overall budget of carbon cycling. This budget shows the importance of microbial (planktonic and benthic) heterotrophs versus zooplankton in the utilization of primary production. Comparison with literature data suggests that this could be a general feature of coastal, as opposed to open sea ecosystems.

A case study of ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer OMA
Noone, K.J.; Johnson, D.W.; Taylor, J.P.; Ferek, R.J.; Garrett, T.; Hobbs, P.V.; Durkee, P.A.; Nielsen, K.; Öström, E.; O'Dowd, C.; Smith, M.H.; Russell, L.M.; Flagan, R.C.; Seinfeld, J.H.; De Bock, L.; Van Grieken, R.; Hudson, J.G.; Brooks, I.; Gasparovic, R.F.; Pockalny, R.A..
A case study of the effects of ship emissions on the microphysical, radiative, and chemical properties of polluted marine boundary layer clouds is presented. Two ship tracks are discussed in detail. <i>In situ</i> measurements of cloud drop size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside-cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to remotely sensed measurements of cloud radiative properties. The authors examine the processes behind ship track formation in a polluted marine boundary layer as an example of the effects of anthropogenic particulate pollution on the albedo of marine stratiform clouds.

A case study of ships forming and not forming tracks in moderately polluted clouds OMA
Noone, K.J.; Öström, E.; Ferek, R.J.; Garrett, T.; Hobbs, P.V.; Johnson, D.W.; Taylor, J.P.; Russell, L.M.; Flagan, R.C.; Seinfeld, J.H.; O'Dowd, C.D.; Smith, M.H.; Durkee, P.A.; Nielsen, K.; Hudson, J.G.; Pockalny, R.A.; De Bock, L.; Van Grieken, R.E.; Gasparovic, R.F.; Brooks, I..
The effects of anthropogenic particulate emissions from ships on the radiative, microphysical, and chemical properties of m(oderately polluted marine stratiform clouds are examined. A case study of two ships in the same air mass is presented where one of the vessels caused a discernible ship track while the other did not. <i>In situ</i> measurements of cloud droplet size distributions, liquid water content, and cloud radiative properties, as well as aerosol size distributions (outside cloud, interstitial, and cloud droplet residual particles) and aerosol chemistry, are presented. These are related to measurements of cloud radiative properties. The differences between the aerosol in the two ship plumes are discussed; these indicate that...

A cladistic re-assessment of the <i>Polycystis</i> species complex (Polycystididae, Eukalyptorhynchia) OMA
Artois, T.J.; Schockaert, E.R..
The taxonomy of the genus <i>Polycystis</i> Koelliker, 1845 <i>sensu</i> Schockaert & Karling, 1975 is discussed. Character analysis reveals the monophyletic state of the three species groups these authors defined within it. As no synapomorphies for the three groups can be found, the genus is split in three genera: <i>Polycystis</i> Koelliker, 1845, <i>Macrorhynchus</i> Graff, 1882 and <i>Paulodora Marcus</i>, 1948. The systematic position of <i>Macrorhynchus yaganus</i> (Marcus, 1954) Evdonin, 1977 is also discussed, resulting in the erection of the new genus <i>Marcusia</i> gen. n.

A comparative study on the use of different preparations of decapsulated <i>Artemia</i> cysts as food for rearing African catfish (<i>Clarias gariepinus</i>) larvae OMA
Pector, R.; Tackaert, W.; Abelin, P.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
African catfish (<i>Clarias gariepinus</i>) larvae were fed on five preparations of decapsulated Great Salt Lake <i>Artemia</i> cysts: 1) dried (35°C, 6 h) and UV-irradiated cysts; 2) heated cysts (80°C, 10 min); 3) brine dehydrated and UV irradiated cysts; 4) micro-bound diet 1(with intact decapsulated cysts used in diet preparation 1); and 5) micro-bound diet 2 (with crushed and shifted decapsulated diet used in diet preparation 1). The larvae were fed from the first day after yolk-sac resorption (fourth day after hatching). After a 14-d rearing period, larvae fed on dried or heated decapsulated cysts or micro-bound diet 1. Feeding micro-bound diet 2 resulted in a significantly lower average gain in weight as compared to the other...

A comparison between models describing the influence of temperature on the development rate of copepods OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
Four mathematical expressions relating development time to temperature are compared. All four yield good predictions of the development rate of the copepod <i>Tachidius discipes</i>. The use of the equation of Belehradek is criticized. It is concluded that the power equation D= aTb gives the best approximation in this case.

A comparison of fast destruction methods for the determination of trace metals in biological materials OMA
Luyten, S.; Smeyers-Verbeke, J.; Massart, D.L..
In clinical chemistry it can be very useful to have a rapid method for the determination of trace elements in biological material available. Because the classical wet digestion method which is generally used for the destruction of biological materials requires much attention, two procedures were tried which should be less time consuming or require less attention. The two new procedures which are the soluene (a quaternary ammonium hydroxide) method of Jackson (1) and the method of Adrian (2) utilizing pressure were applied to the determination of Cu and Zn in human brain tissue and in fish meal by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

A demographic study of the life cycle of <i>Tisbe furcata</i> (Baird, 1837) (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) OMA
Bergmans, M..
The life-cycle of the harpacticoid copepod <i>Tisbe furcata</i> (Baird, 1837) at 18°C was studied quantitatively. Stage durations were determined by two different methods, using synchronous cohorts. Combined nauplius stages last for 80.4h; the successive copepodite stages take 23.0, 23.2, 28.0 (females) to 23.2 (males), 33.4 (females) to 24.2 (males) and 48.8 (females) to 34.7 (males) h, respectively. Females develop more slowly but more synchronously than males. Age-specific survival and fertility rates were used to calculate the stable stage distribution in an exponentially growing population. From life-table data the following demographic parameters were computed: intrinsic rate of natural increase...

A genetic comparison of Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of a saltmarsh beetle OMA
Desender, K.; Serrano, J..
Enzyme and dispersal polymorphism in the saltmarsh carabid beetle <i>Pogonus chalceus</i> Marsham were compared between 30 Atlantic and nine Mediterranean European populations. Allozyme results showed that Mediterranean beetles (France, Spain) are genetically distinct from Atlantic populations. All Mediterranean beetles screened showed complete fixation at one locus (IDH1), which in Atlantic populations nearly always varied, whereas some unique Mediterranean alleles were observed for another locus (MPI). Genetic differentiation (allozymes) between Mediterranean populations, although highly significant, appeared to be much lower (Fst = 0.098) than between Atlantic populations (Fst = 0.178). Beetles...

A handy method for measuring meiobenthic respiration OMA
Moens, T.; Vierstraete, A.; Vanhove, S.; Verbeke, M.; Vincx, M..
Our current understanding of meiofaunal respiration rates, and especially of the way they are influenced by changing abiotic factors, is still far from complete. Meiofaunal respiration is traditionally measured using Cartesian divers or related manometric techniques, but these are extremely time-consuming and labour-consuming. We have evaluated the use of Strathkelvin polarographic electrode model 1302 and the O2 monitor model 781 in determining the O2 consumption of meiofaunal animals. Respiration rates obtained in this way of the terrestrial nematode <i>Caenorhabditis elegans</i> compared well with results obtained from Cartesian diver respirometry. Experiments with 3 estuarine nematode species...
